Gift of Miss Lucy Swanton, 1981

IMAGE COPYRIGHT: Art Gallery of New South Wales

Thea Proctor displays her adept draughtsmanship in this pen, brush and ink on paper drawing titled Nude, where the fluidity of lines captures the elegance of the female form.  Having studied at Julian Ashton Art School, along with George Lambert, Elioth Gruner and Sydney Long (to whom she was engaged at one time) and being an admirer of the great French realist draughtsman, Ingres, she saw drawing as an essential ingredient to her art. ‘She was a perfectionist and her pencil portraits and figure drawings are exquisitely traditional’[i]. This drawing was donated to the Gallery in 1981 and is the only work by Proctor in the collection.

In 1903, at the age of 24, she travelled to London to study at St John's Wood Art Schools with fellow artist and lifelong friend George Lambert. She remained in London for eighteen years only returning to Australia once for a period of two years to exhibit her work.  While in London she concentrated on drawing and watercolour painting, and maintained a preoccupation with line, form and colour. She successfully exhibited her drawings, decorative fan designs and watercolours usually on silk at the Royal Academy of Arts and the New English Art Club. She returned and settled in Australia after the war in 1921, setting up a city studio and residence in the Grosvenor Building at 219 George Street, Sydney.

Thea Proctor adhered to traditional aesthetic values but she did appreciate and support modernism with its experimentation of light, colour and design. ‘It was one of the great paradoxes of Thea Proctor’s art that although its colour and design were seen as modern, its subject matter was often nostalgic, invoking earlier periods of elegance’[ii]. On her return to Sydney her work, though not ‘visually modern’, was thought to have a modern outlook and she was considered ‘exotic’ due to her dramatic and decorative use of colour. Thea Proctor thought it amusing that she had been described in the press as ‘dangerously modern’ [iii].  In 1926 with George Lambert, Proctor formed The Contemporary Group to encourage experimentation among contemporary artists at the time.

Thea Proctor taught design and printmaking and it has been claimed that her classes were pivotal in creating a strong group of exponents of the art of woodcut and linocut in simplified modern style in Sydney.  Among many other things, she created theatre and interior designs, and designs for Home magazine.

Gift of Mrs Crowley, 1987

R H Robertson was a professional architect with a practice in Pitt St Sydney, who was born in Perthshire (Almondbank) Scotland in 1840. He was an amateur artist and spent much of his time drawing and painting en plein air of the whole Manly region from c 1895-1930.

These small observational drawings have become important documents for Manly in recording the waterways, geographical and built environment around the region. Robertson’s interest in architecture usually meant that he would include a church, the bandstands, the market gardens,   and other evidence of human intervention and encroachment on the natural landscape. His watercolours are very subtle and gentle with sometimes awkwardness in the drawing but he would repeat his subject matter over and over again until he was satisfied.

His collection was donated by a friend, Mrs Crowley in 1987, who had been holding onto them since his death at Thornton St Manly in 1935.

Watercolour on paper, 18 x 27cm

Signed and dated BLC, watercolour 'Percy.S.Spence 1910'.

This watercolour dating from 1910 is of immense historical interest and probably the first painting to show women ‘lifesavers’. It records not only the social history of beach usage, bathing and beach fashion, but also ‘the unexpected physicality and strength of women at the time, and their active participation in outdoor activities’[i].

Wearing neck to knee woollen bathing costumes they are demonstrating the ‘line and reel’ method which was invented in 1906. It was only in 1903 that surf bathing in daylight hours had been legalized and was becoming a popular sport. The Manly Women's Rescue and Resuscitation team, formed in 1910, was one of the first in Australia. Women were, however, excluded from competing for the bronze medallion, which qualified them to become lifesavers, until 1980.

In this work, Percy Spence has used a painterly technique of tiny, delicate strokes to build up the image rather than a series of washes. The madonna‑like figure to the right holding a young child has rather serene presence, her enveloping robe contrasting with the strenuous activity of the rescue demonstration.

Percy Spence was born in Balmain and educated in Fiji. In 1888, he was a foundation member of the Sketch Club within the Art Society of NSW where he often exhibited drawings and paintings. He worked as an illustrator for several magazines in Australia and England, including the Bulletin from 1896 and the Sydney Mail.

Manly Art Gallery & Museum also holds two oil paintings by Percy Spence, a portrait of James Bonner and The Silent Pool, both donated by the Wright family in 1937.  Manly Beach with lady lifesavers has been lent to numerous exhibition including On the beach: Travelling Art Exhibition 1982 by the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Sirens and Heroes by the Australian National Maritime Museum in 1995. It was also the key image for the 2010 Manly Arts Festival.
