The Gallery also owns the large oil painting, November Ferry, 2004 which it purchased through the Theo Batten Bequest. In 2004 also, the Gallery managed the touring exhibition Harbourlights: The Art and Times of Peter Kingston, to mark the publication of the book of the same name, written by Gavin Wilson, which traces the evolution of this naturally gifted and fascinating artist and personality. Kingston’s enthusiasm and passion for art, as well as various social and environmental causes, is reflected though his art. His lifelong interest in Sydney Harbour continues to fuel his creative output and has helped establish him as one of Sydney’s most prolific and respected contemporary artists.

‘As a people living on the harbour shores and beyond, we tend to commune with the water to make our way about. Since Billy Blue set up his ferry operation at what is now Blues Point, commuting on the harbour has been a way of life both practical and pleasurable. The issue of access and amenity on the harbour has been an ongoing concern for many people. Artist/activist Peter Kingston has amplified those concerns with a sustained tribute to the old wooden Hegarty’s ferries that no longer operate from Circular Quay. These spirited little vessels have inspired a fine series of linocut prints that include Friday Night at Kookaburras, 2003 and Morning Star, 2002.’ [1]

Over the past decade, Kingston has watched with dismay the loss of much of our maritime heritage relating to the working harbour; including Walsh Bay, Darling Harbour, Cockatoo Island and has sought to captured this in his drawings, prints and paintings. ‘As a draughtsman he is most attracted to modern day illustrators and cartoonists, especially when content is conveyed to maximum effect with a minimum of means. When he puts drawing to the service of his humour or anger, he can be compassionate, outrageously funny, or sharply ironical’. [2]

Peter Kingston donated this linoprint to the collection in 2005.

Swans and peacocks, c.1930

Gift of the artist, 1930

Norman Lindsay belonged to one of the most famous families in Australian art. Of the ten children raised in the small Victorian mining town of Creswick, five made their names in the Australian art world. Norman Lindsay was an artist of diverse talent. He illustrated many books and was a fine watercolourist, painter and sculptor as well as being a prolific and influential writer of poetry, novels and art criticism. He had published eight novels by the late 1930s, one of which was the popular children’s book The Magic Pudding (1918). In 1901 he was employed as an illustrator and cartoonist for the popular Bulletin Magazine, producing political cartoons and comments on national life. This job provided a steady income for the best part of fifty years.

As an Australian painter of the early twentieth century he was at the forefront of popular taste but may have been patronisingly overlooked by the advocates of high modernism. Norman Lindsay derided modernism and developed his own idiosyncratic philosophical values in response to what he saw as the failure of modern values in the aftermath of the Great War. He was influenced by Plato and Nietzsche, which saw him reject his Christian upbringing, embrace spiritualism and favour the elitist role of the artist in society.

Norman Lindsay was the most controversial member of the Lindsay family. His watercolours of lascivious nymphs cavorting with peacocks sold well but caused lively battles with the ‘wowsers’, pious people who saw it as their duty to maintain society’s morals. The female nude was one of Norman Lindsay's main preoccupations.Women, for Lindsay, were passionate, beautiful, sexual and courageous but also due to their social conditioning, they were also petty, vicious and capricious. In Swans and peacocks the woman’s curvaceous body is on display for the viewer to admire, her face coyly turned hiding her dual nature.

After a long life he died in 1969 and bequeathed his former home and collections to the state of NSW, which is now maintained as a museum by the National Trust. The Gallery has three works on paper by Lindsay in its collection. He donated this work to the Gallery in about 1930.

Olsen, John

AUSTRALIAN, b. 1928

Sydney Harbour - Seaport of Desire - Peak Hour, 2003

full colour etching, 44 x 60cm, 1 of a suite of 7

published by Port Jackson Press, Melbourne. Limited Edition  42/90

Purchased by the Gallery with the assistance of the Theo batten Bequest 2006

John Olsen was born in Newcastle, NSW in 1928. He moved with his family to Bondi Beach in 1935. In 1943 he left school to work as a clerk, then became a freelance cartoonist for publications such as Man and Fashion Design. Interestingly he was taught by Dattillo Rubbo as he attended his art school in the city in 1947. Later on in 1950 he attended Julian Ashton Art School  where he studied under John Passmore, and later Godfrey Miller at East Sydney Technical College. He exhibited with the Society of Artists between1952-55 and had his first major exhibition, at Macquarie Galleries, Sydney. He has gone on to have a very successful career, travelling and painting in Europe and Spain in particular, returning to Australia and making a name for himself in the national art scene as a raconteur and leading Australian artist.

“A riotous menu of mixed experience is on offer in John Olsen’s Entrance to the Seaport of Desire, 1964. Olsen betrays a Dionysian entanglement in what he perceives as the delights and terrors of the ‘siren city’. After returning from Europe in 1961, where he had immersed himself in the works of modernist masters such as Miro and Tapies, and the sculptural works of architect Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona, Olsen began to inject himself into the local scene. Energised and focused, the 36-year-old artist consolidated his standing with a passionate vision along with the talent to match.

In preparation for Entrance to the Seaport of Desire, Olsen noted all manner of life on, in and around the harbour – the bustling docks; congested lines of traffic jostling across the bridge; the cast of ferries yachts and motor boats plying the waterways; the delights of swimming in the harbour and watching children exploring its rock pools; the exquisite secluded bays for quiet reverie and the folly of peoples’ desire to possess and re-shape this fragile realm. What was visually fresh about Entrance to the Seaport of Desire was its complex abstract expressionist layering, but more importantly it was seen as raw and provocative”. Gavin Wilson

This particular series of prints has the vigour and expressiveness of his usual frenetic line work. Olsen has always depicted the Australian landscape dramatically and with a sense of familiarity. His Sydney Harbour suite of seven etchings is no exception. In this particular print Peak Hour Olsen has captured Sydney Harbour Bridge and its surrounds from a topographical bird’s eye view.  Olsen’s style is spontaneous and dynamic. The traffic is conveyed on the north side of the bridge through a thin maze of lines which carry the viewers eyes onto the bridge and onto the city in an explosion of line and colour . This etching brings together one of Australia’s most recognised landscape artists with Sydney’s iconic harbour.
